Hey that worked for me for I was having the same problem. Could you
tell me how to get windows xp w/ SP2 to do this automatically rather

It's called "applet". See if the following command helps, from Start/Run:
DESK.CPL
This should open the Display Properties dialog, with the Themes tab
selected
by default.
