Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Ben,

I'm so sorry to hear the laptop went into BSOD situation. Based on my
experience,it may be caused by hardware issue. However, to locate the exact
problem of the stop error, we need to analyze the crash dump file.
Unfortunately, we cannot help you analyze the dump file in newsgroup. To
trouble shoot this problem efficiently, I suggest that you speak directly
with a Microsoft Support Professional so that the crash dump can be
analyzed. Here are some articles that will help prepare you for this call:

numbers and information about support costs, please go to the following

For your situation, I think perform a fresh installation is a good idea
since even repair installation didn't help.

Sorry again for your encounting such obstacle.

Guys,

The users laptop got so bad he couldn't work on it, explorer kept
crashing,
so he brought it in. I did all the safe mode booting, ipconfig and
pinging,
everything seemed OK.
Then I tried the repair install, which went through, rebooted, and then
died! Now all I get is the boot menu, with safe mode, safe mode with
networking, LKGF, and boot normally, no matter which option I select, I
get
a BSOD, which flashes up too quick to see any of the information, before
the
machine reboots, and gets stuck in a loop.

Any ideas?

Ben

Hi Vincent, Hi Trooper,

The consultant who's laptop it having the problems is out of the office
today, and has the laptop with him. But he will be in tomorrow, so I
will
try the Safe Mode + pinging DNS & DC that Trooper suggested first, if
that
doesn't help, I'll try Vincent's suggestion of the repair installation.

I will post back my finding tomorrow.

Cheers

Ben

Hi Ben,

If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode,I'd like to suggest you
perform
a
repair installation to recover the system.

In order to perform a repair installation of Windows XP, you can try
the
following steps:

1. Make sure you have set your CD-ROM as the first priority boot
device.
You may refer to your computer manual for information on how to do
this.
2. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and reboot your computer.
3. When you see Press any key to boot from CD on the screen, press a
key
to
let your computer boot from the Windows XP CD.
4. When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it check your hardware and
then
prompt you the some options.
Please press ENTER to choose "To set up Windows XP now"
Press the F8 key to agree the Licensing Agreement.

5. You will see your current Windows XP installation is listed in a
box
and
get the following options:
To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press
ESC.

Please press R to repair the Windows XP

By this way, the wizard will recopy all the system files to the
computer
and do not replace the registry files. So you do not ned to reinstall
the
applications. You can take a look at the following URL for more
information
of the above steps:

XP

Please tell me the result of this issue at your earliest convenience.

Thanks.

Boot Safe Mode with network support....
1)*Verify your DHCP or Static ip configuration is correct (ipconfig
/all) at the command.
2)*Ping 127.0.0.1 (This verifies your tcp/ip stack is functioning).
3)*Ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (your IP) (This verifies your card is
functioning).
4)*Try pinging your domain controller by ip (This verifies a hardware
connection to the DC).
4A)*If you have any other hardware between you and the DC you will
need
to run step number 4 on it aswell.
5)*Try pinging your domain controller by name (This verifies your DNS
is resolving to ip's).

If all above is functioning correctly you may need to 'Recovery
Install' XP.
Without knowing more about your network layout.. it is difficult to
say
why your machine cannot connect to the DC for syncronization, unless
your user's profile has been edited, or removed from the DC.

Hi Trooper,

Thanks for the reply.

You are correct, the machine is part of a domain (Win 2003), however
this
error is appearing while connected to the domain, via hardwire 100mb
Ethernet. Network card seems OK, I have installed the latest
drivers,
DNS is
configured correctly, I can ping the domain and the DC.

Users do not have local admin access, as they tend to install
nasties,
and
they have domain accounts, so they can use folder redirection,
exchange, and
a few other domain based apps.

Cheers

Your laptop is trying to phone home.
It belongs to a domain.
Take it back to work, where it belongs, and plug it in there.

Failing that, you could always try logging on with the
Administrator's
account on the local machine not on the Domain.
