Updating Non-Genuine with Retail winXP Pro

I have a computer with the XP Pro Volume Licensing. A while ago
Microsft told me to purchase a copy of the Full retail XP Pro SP2 and
It would make it a legit copy. I have been hesitate to install it, but
I guess its time. When I put the retail disk in Windows it can be
"upgraded". When I started from the booting from a cd rom it can be
"repaired". Is either way ok? I would still like a safer method.
Does Microsoft have a tool that could be used to enter the new key and
change it to the retail pro version without basically reinstalling,
repairing or upgrading. Just afraid to lose data. If anyone can help
I would appreciate it. Just curious, are their any other versions of
XP Pro that can do this sort of legal update? Can earler versions of
retail XP Pro (such as SP-1 or 1a) be used? Can Retail Upgrade XP Pro
do the same thing, etc.?
