Internet Explorer System HAN when loading too much stuff! Help!

I have been encountering random system hangs when using IE.
Always hangs when accessing the Google Adsense Referrals page, where it
preloads about 200+ referral images, the whole system hangs. No error
message, nothing.

This page is the best stripped down version I could produce that would hang
my browser in about 5 seconds loading it. I have set my max http connections
in the registry to 1k to easier reproduce the problem. (Note that I have
tried this on another PC with http connection limit at 1k and it worked
flawlessly in IE, no system hang)
I know, its too much. But its only for testing purposes. If I set it to 8,
the page does not hang my computer, but the random hangs still continue when
I do my normal surfing. It contains about 200+ HTTPS images.
The odd thing thing is that this problem does not occur when I use a USB
connection to my modem. The USB connection creates a USB ethernet connection
and opening the above page gives no problem. Opening the page with Firefox
(after altering the connection and pipeline to 1k) goes without any problem.
What could be the cause of it? Simply opening too many connections in IE
hangs the system?
Windows XP SP2
P4 3Ghz Northwood
ASUS P4P800 SE
3GB RAM
MSI Geforce 5900XT
Appreciate any advice. Thanks.
