P.S. I forgot to mention I just upgraded my ram memory from 512 mb to
2GB

mintues and booted up my computer.. It booted with no problem.. I
repeated
this whole sequence several times with the same results.. I for the
life
of
can't figure it out... My computer should boot with or without the
second
cd-rom, shouldn't it????? Adding a cd-rom or a dvd-rom should not
keep
my
computer from booting up should it?????

In my cmos, I have it set to boot-up with the hard drive as my first
boot-up, the second is the cd-rom.. but I don't see how removing or
replacing
the 'slave' cd-rom would prevent it from booting into windows..

Can someone please tell me what is causing this.. I need a dvd-rom
drive.
not paticularly the brand of the dvd-rom I just bought (which I have

took back anyway) but I do need to get a dvd-rom asap in my computer

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

What happens if you attempt to boot to a bootable floppy disk (assuming
you
have one) or to a bootable CD, e.g., the XP installation CD?

Hi Anna,
I put my old cd-rom slave back in. So now everything is the way it was
before I tried to replace this slave cd-rom with the dvd-rom.. It boots
fine,
No problem, no error messages... never had a problem..

The problem starts when I take this slave-cd-rom out, the computer won't
boot pass the first boot screen, it hangs and sets there doing nothing, I
can't get into cmos or anything, nor will it boot to xp disk or any other
disk. I litterally have to turn the computer off.. it did the same thing
when
I tried to put the new dvd-rom in. BUT when I put the old slave cd-rom
back
in, it will boot up to windows.. so I don't know why that cd-rom slave has
to
be there in order for my computer to boot up???? The master CD-r/w-rom is
set to master and the other one is set to slave.. same for both hard
drives
so the settings are ok.. I have checked and reset and recheck the cables,
they seem to be working just fine, if they weren't it wouldn't boot up
even
with the old cd-rom back in, right?
This is what has me baffled.. what is it with this cd-rom slave that seems
to have the control over my computer booting? It don't make sense..

I honestly don't know what else to suggest. While I have come across some
rare cases where a defective secondary (non-bootable) IDE device would cause
the system *not* to boot, I can't recall where its absence resulted in the
same problem. Aside from that unusual situation, *every* case I've come
across with a problem similar or identical to yours resulted from either
defective component(s) or one or more misconfigurations of normally
functional IDE/ATAPI devices.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile to contact MSI - the manufacturer of your
motherboard - to see if they can shed any light on this.

If & when you resolve this problem, I would appreciate hearing about its
solution.

    ... Its boot sequence is set to cd rom and it still give ... were able to detect the PRI Master and the SEC Slave and it was set to boot ... I have personally seen CD drives not "booting" when set up as SEC ... IDE settings follow the requirements that a Master should be connected ...
