Startup Error

Hi,
When I start my computer, I've started getting an error message within
a few seconds, it then shuts down. The error is:
ERROR. CPU FAN FAILED. HAVE PC SERVICED IMMIEDIATELY. THE SYSTEM
WILL POWER DOWN IN 5 SECONDS.
This occurs when the machine has been off for a while (e.g. overnight,
I get this error every morning).
Despite the obvious, I suspect some other problem as the CPU fan is
working (I took the cover off to watch it as I startup, and it starts
instantly).
Also, a second attempt to start is usually successfull with no error
message and Windows will start and run normally with no problems.
I think that the fan is not being detected at startup. If I am
correct, then I have no idea how to sort it.
My system is: AMD 1.2ghz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP SP2
I would greatly appreciate any help in fixing this annoying error.
Thanks
