Further to the above post: I ran the dxdiag tool and it said the file
system.dll was missing and that I should reinstall DirectX. But when I try
to do this I hit the problem mentioned above. I have looked for information
on reinstalling DirectX. Some sites recommend doing so from a CD - the XP
SP2 CD, I assume - but this presumably has an earlier version of DirectX. So
I seem to be stuck.

I am trying to install the DirectX End-User Runtime update from the
Microsoft site. A little way into the installation I get the error message:
A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify
the Cryptographic Services are enabled and the cabinet file certificate is
valid.
I have verified that the Cryptographic Servies are started but I have no
idea what to do then.
