OK, hold the train. Why are you getting a message on "cmd.com" ? Your system should not have a file by that name.
A "cmd.EXE" is fine & is from XP.
You have a serious PE worm infection! The worm alcan.a
This has indeed dropped several bogus .com files and has indeed hampered tracert & ping.
If you must use the command interpreter, you will have to use "CMD.EXE"
You can run AV utilities in Safe mode (and later repeat in Normal mode). Simply make sure you download tools & updated definitions from a clean pc --- not the suspect machine.
Make very sure your system does not have malware.
See <http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware>
Sysclean would be a good first run for virus check. Just be sure sure to also run other spyware / malware checks.
Get SYSCLEAN from Trendmicro and run it.

I get an error message when I type in cmd from run labled:.
"16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem Error
C:\WINDOWSsystem32\cmd.com
The NTVDM SPU has encountered an illeagal instruction.
CS:0db6 IP:0105 OP:ff fd 58 5d Choose 'Close' to terminate the application
Close/Ignore"
Also, I cannot use PING, tracert and some other functions in command prompt,
it will just freeze on me.
I also hear my CPU speed up, and it is very slow when I type thigns into it.
ipconfig works ok, but everything is so slow.
I am running Windows XP Pro, with SP2 (from HP disk) on a laptop cpu: P4 3.2
HT.
I just need a way to fix this problem as I have to 'pay' microsoft to help me.
Thanks
