Having upgraded from an old pc, i was wondering what the advantage of
having a hard drive partitioned was? Mine is divided into C and D,
with C doing the majority of the work.
IMO you were wise to do so.
As to my experience the old "Golden Rule" of keeping data apart from the OS still pays - not only for keeping things in a better sorted way but for backups too and mainly when having to make a new install of the OS.
If all of the data are kept on D: one can easily make a fresh install from scratch without loosing any data.
Can I save new programs to D instead to stop C filling up?
You could if C: would really get to full. Windows and the applications won't care where a program is installed.
But I would not suggest to go this way.
Use D: for *ALL* of the data instead.
Using TweakUI (part of the MS PowerToys for XP) It's pretty easy to redirect all of the personal stuff (My Documents, My Music, my Videos, Favorites etc.) so that they are stored away from the OS and kept in a "safe place".
Download it from here:
