Windows Media Player causes freeze

I have a problem with the PC Freezing. This happens repeatedly under
two conditions:
1. when playing streaming video clips or web-cam feeds using Windows
Media Player 10. Freezing usually occurs when using the embedded
version but sometimes in the stand alone version too; and
2. when running a scan using Spybot S&D, (again, fully updated).
The PC is running Windows XP Home SP2 fully updated. When the freeze
occurs, the only way to reboot is by hitting the reset button.
Subsequent investigations of the Error Log reveal no errors or warnings
in any of the logs. In both circumstances, the freeze does not happen
immediately, but occurs after two or three minutes running either WMP
10 or Spybot. The PC does not freeze under any other conditions.
I have run sfc/ scannow which called for me to insert the XP Home disk
soon after starting, but the error still occurs. Streaming video played
with RealPlayer does not have the same effect - i.e. clips play
normally. A full PC-Cillin anti-virus scan and an Ad-Aware scan has
revealed nothing untoward.
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions?
TIA
