Re: Virus Scan creating Temp files

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

What do antispyware scans say?

Update whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

In news:8B4F1DC5-EB0E-4533-B342-0F8441598CAF@xxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Jo <Jo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> hunted and pecked:
I have a problem with my laptop that my MITS at work can't seem to fix.
Their response was since I was running the virus scan on my computer daily
that is what was causing my computer to create temp files (with nothing in
them) in my Windows folder on the C drive. (I'm not real computer smart)
But I don't believe running the virus scan once a day is causing my
computer to create in excess of 1,000 new temp files everytime it's run.
They seem to think since I'm the only person who they have heard runs the
scan daily then I'm the problem. Little history. A few years back
(2003/2004) when there was a worm (not sure of the name) was running wild
causing the infected computers to shut down with out warning my computer
started to freeze up when the virus scan was run and would freeze when it
hit any file with msobshel in the name. I never got the virus/worm but
problem started happening. I had all the files with the msobshel file
deleted then for some strange reason it started taking longer and longer
for my virus scan to run. What MITS found at that time was that my temp
file had in excess of 65,000 files in it and had completely taken up all
the space in the temp folder. MItS cleared out the temp file and the
virus scan ran the normal lenght (about 35 minutes). I have had help
from three different MITS persons, one had elevated the problem, another
amitted he didn't know what was causing the problem and this last person
told me I was an idot. Not in those words but he's telling me that it's
normal for the virus scan to create in excess of 1,000 temp files
everytime it runs. Does any one know what is causing this problem? The
antivirus program has changed since this first started, started out with
Norton and now we use ISS. I don't know if the orginal problem with the
msobshel file caused the virus scan to start creating these files or if
this is two different problems and have no bearing on each other. I have
always ran my virus scan no matter what computer or virus program I have
had since about 1997 and have never had this problem before. I'm probably
one of very few persons who run their virus scan everyday. Please help,
I have about 2 to 3 months before this problem surfaces again (at that
time it will take in excess of 3 hours to run the virus scan). MITS has
cleared out my temp foler in Windows, since I don't have access to do
this, so I have a little while before the temp folder starts to fill up
again. Additional info - Windows XP is program running on computer.

Thank you so much.
