Problem with activation

I have a client with an HP machine with an oem XP pro serial number sticker applied to it. He was unable to find the original CD, but he did have another oem CD which I used to re-install XP on the HP. When it got to the serial number part I put in the serial on the sticker of the machine, the installation then completed quite happily. Problem I have now is that activation is complaining about the serial number not being correct, why did the install process complete ok ? What can I do to fix this, worst case is trying to find the original CD I guess and doing the install again, are there any other options ?
