I suddenly cannot open PDF files in IE.



I have two computers, A and B, each running Windows XP Pro SP2. They are
connected to a router which, in turn, is connected to a cable modem.

Until a few days ago, both computers, and in particular Internet Explorer,
were working perfectly. Since then, there have been two events of note:

1. About a week ago, I was not able to connect to the Internet. I phoned
the help desk at the cable-provider and a technician guided me through a
number of steps. Everything tested normally, and he then directed me to
contact the manufacturer, SMC, of my router. I did, and received email
instructions that began with my removing the router from the system. There
were then a great many steps to be performed when I re-installed the
router. But I skipped these steps, since everything seemed back to normal
when I simply connected the router back into the hookup.

2. I downloaded and installed the large security patch from MS on Tuesday.

Until yesterday morning I had Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 and Adobe Reader 7.0.7
installed on each computer.

About two days ago, both computers ceased being able to download and open
PDF files in Internet Explorer. (I was, however, able to download and open
PDF files in Firefox.)

Yesterday, I removed Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader from computer B, and
then re-installed only Adobe Reader 7.0.7. I now can open online PDF files
in IE in computer B. But I also need to install Acrobat 5.0.5 - the
distiller 'printer' is vital for my work. Dare I do so, or will that
cripple IE's ability to read online PDF files?

What I really want to do is to have both Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 and Adobe
Reader 7.0.7 installed on both computers AND to be able to open online PDF
files, using Adobe Reader 7.0.7, in IE. (This is the arrangement that I
had, and which worked, until a few days ago.)

Do you have any idea where the source of the problem is/was? Is/was it the
MS security patch? Might it be/have been the router? Should I remove the
patch? Should I run the installation program for the router? Should I
proceed to install Acrobat 5.0.5 on computer B?
