Now, see it has a USB socket and an "Ethernet" socket. Better to call
it an RJ45 socket.

You should have an identical "Ethernet" socket on the back of your
computer. An RJ45 socket

That RJ45 socket is your network interface socket. (we can call it that
too). Good to call it that.

You can choose whether to plug your cable modem into your USB port with
a usb cable. Or your network interface socket using a short (like 1M or
less) cat5e cable.

If you want to use the 'network interface socket' then your computer's
drivers will have to be properly installed. Includnig the drivers for
that socket. It appears that they arent' installed.

You could use USB though. Generally using the network socket is
considered better than using USB. But most people use USB. You could
use USB until you get the network socket sorted out.

For the network interface method, you want to install the 'ethernet'
drivers. Those drivers must be onthe CDs that your computer came with.
Otherwise you go to the manufacturers site and download them. If
soembody build the comp for you and you can't contact them, then If the
socket is on the MBRD, go to the MBRD site. If the socket is on the a
NIC go to the NIC's site or driverguide. And if you don't understand
an abbrevation, use google.
