With many older laptops, it was often necessary to alter a setting in the
BIOS so that the external mouse and built-in pointer (either touchpad or
eraser-head) wouldn't conflict. It was usually called something like
"Single Pointer or Single Mouse;" what it does is disable the built-in
device whenever an external pointing device is detected. Some newer
laptops have a Function Key feature to toggle between pointing devices.
Check your laptop's manual to see if more specific information is
provided.
