I then shut down disconnected both drives and put the 160

worked fine. I connected my other 160gig (which I have saved everything to )
to the middle
slot on the ribbon. when i turn it on it stays on the dell screen and after
about 20 seconds comes up 0 primary hd not found 1primary hd not found.
checked bios and reads unknow devices for primary hd 0 and 1. restarted
several times and kept on doing the same thing. Now here is the funny part.
I removed my secondary 160 and put my original 120 wd hd on as secondary and
loads fine. Keep in mind it has a os on it. the question is did my 160 hd
die just that fast? It was working fine.

Ok, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this has happened to me..
it's winter, the air is cool and dry, there's lots of static, the Bios
is not recognizing the drive.....

Quite possibly when you disconnected the drive it was dismounted from
the case, thus no ground, then you disconnected the power cord FIRST,
that leaves a flow of static from the case of the drive, which you're
holding in your hand, through the IDE connector to the motherboard.
That can fry the cmos I/O chip on the HD. Or the firmware can be
corrupted by a spark anywhere, Even just disconnecting the power cord
before the ribbon while still mounted can cause harm. ALWAYS leave
the drive mounted or at least grounded to the case, and connect the
power connector first then the IDE ribbon, or FIRST disconnect the
ribbon then the power connector... Everything you're describing about
the order of events suggests the drive was lost when you disconnected
it or during reconnecting. It's even more likely if the system was
inadvertently powered up when doing this.

... Sorry..
