Re: secondary hard drive not reconized when connected

Ann Thank you for replying. Let me see if i can answer your questions so
you'll know more about the situation.
1. I have 4 kids and they have downloaded all kinds of stuff to the
computer. I wanted to "clean the slate" so I removed the secondary hd
(wanted to make sure nothing happened to it by accident when i reformatted.
i formatted the drive using xp but it only came up as a 130gig limitation. I
used wd software the first time to correct the limitation problem which it
did and both drives read 149gig. so what i did was i took my original hd
that came with the computer(120 western digital) which still had xp os on it.
I put that as primary then put my 160gig primary as secondary. I then went
in and used the western digital software data lifeguard tools and
reformatted. I then shut down disconnected both drives and put the 160
primary back on to the end connection. I then loaded xp. booted fine,
worked fine. I connected my other 160gig (which I have saved everything to )
to the middle
slot on the ribbon. when i turn it on it stays on the dell screen and after
about 20 seconds comes up 0 primary hd not found 1primary hd not found.
checked bios and reads unknow devices for primary hd 0 and 1. restarted
several times and kept on doing the same thing. Now here is the funny part.
I removed my secondary 160 and put my original 120 wd hd on as secondary and
loads fine. Keep in mind it has a os on it. the question is did my 160 hd
die just that fast? It was working fine. did the wd software change
something some where? mother board? I don't know.
2. i switche the ribbon cable out to see if there was a problem with the
cable. It did the same thing with both cables so I know the ribbon is not
the problem.
3. both hds were woking together on cable select for past 2 yrs. I even
tried changing the jumpes to master and slave. Still the same thing, will not
boot if that hd is on. I even trie putting the secondary as primary by its
self and computer won' t reconize it even to format it. i did make sure
that i used the end of the ribbon as primary and middle as secondary. If you
have any more ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it . Again
thank you for taking the time to help me-Brian

Both hd are western digital 160gb. they both worked together for past 2
yrs.
I reformatted primary hd using west dig software and loaded windows. when
i
connected them back computer won't boot. comes up primary hd 0 and 1 not
found. removed secondary hd. won't boot. reads primary hd 0 not found. I
went into bios and turned of primary hd 1 off and then computer booted and
runs fine. when i reconnect 2nd hd it's not being reconized by computer
especially in bios.

Please help I have all my family pics saved and no back up!!!

(And he later adds...)
Vincent thanks for replying. I did check for bent pins. I tried the
jumpers
on master/ slave. Before the screw up both hds were working on cable select
with no problem. I did switch the ribbon cable. when I put if as primary
comes up unknown device in the bios. western digital has software to test a
hd but since i can't get it to be reconized I can't run the test. You
mentioned master boot record. Is that in windows or in computer(bios)
itself. I also updated the bios when nothing else worked . I guess i should
tell you it's a dell dimension 8200. don't know if that helps but who
knows.
Anymore thoughts will be greatly appreciated

Brian:
1. You say your two WD 160 GB HDs were apparently working fine for the past
two years. So why was there a need to "reformat" your boot drive?

2. In the future, if there's ever again a need for you to reinstall a fresh
copy of XP, use the XP installation CD to partition/format your HD during
the install process. Do not use a third-party program, such as the WD one to
pre-partition/pre-format your drive prior to installing the XP OS. The XP
program accomplishes this partitioning/formatting just fine. There's no need
for a third-party program.

3. You say that after you installed the OS, you "connected them (the two
HDs) back" and then the computer wouldn't boot. Why did you have to "connect
them back"? Was there some need for a reinstall of your HDs?

4. Why did you "switch the ribbon cable"? What exactly does that mean? Was
there some problem with the original Cable Select configuration?

5. Are you absolutely sure you've correctly connected/configured those two
drives? You've got them jumpered correctly? They're securely connected to
the IDE ribbon cable and to the motherboard's IDE connectors and you've
connected each drive to the correct connector (end or middle) on the IDE
cable, assuming you've configured the system for Cable Select? Once more,
are you absolutely sure you've correctly connected/configured those two
drives?

6. I trust nothing untoward happened when you "updated" the BIOS.

7. Do I understand you to say that if you disconnect your secondary HD, the
system will boot to the primary HD? The problem arises only if the secondary
HD is connected.
Anna
