Normally, most CD / DVD drives (burner included) do not need a driver to be installed. They use the standard MS drivers that exist in XP. You need to install the included DVD creation tools since Microsoft has not made XP to
I had a similar problem with a cd and dvd drive. They appear then disappear in device manager. I was told that i might be hitting a problem with windows has with managing multiple devices, as it worked fine in Ubuntu.
So i bought an ASUS 1608p2s. I could install windows from it but not use it for installing games (STOP errors) or burning etc. I formatted and reinstalled and the DVD-RW drive appeared, and i tested itby installing and playing a game from cd. That was fine. Watched a DVD. fine. Tried installing a game (Civ 4) from DVD. Bam. It was like i'd pulled the power plug.
I'm thinking of trying to copy files from DVD onto ubuntu. Maybe my powerpack is inadequate for the load when the DVD is full speed? It's wattage is obscured and due to the way the case is constructed, getting it out is going to be a pain. I have a spare but it's for an intel p4 (1300 i think)and this is an amd athlon 1400 and i don't know if that's compatible or what. However, if it worked under ubuntu, wouldn't that imply it's a windows XP issue and not a hardware problem?
Help! I promised my gf a working xp box a week ago and I have scabby knees and elbows from all the fiddling around on the floor with this horrid hellbeast of a pc. :*)
Can anyone tell me if they have seen this before and know what the fix is? Is there a log file which might tell me what the fault was that gave me a BSOD? I'll write down the stop error if i see it again but this time it flashed by before poof! back to power off.
