tried downloading again, with the same result.
Made sure I had right version.
What does mean and should I doanything

Go back to Windows Update history. Re-review it. On the item with the red
X under "Satus", click on the red X.
That will lead to a popup window with the actual error number & some text.
Please do that & post back the info.

Maybe your prior failures were in the download phase, & not in the actual
install phase, otherwise a log would be expected.

Yes, I suppose you may remove the Excel viewer.

Before you do that though, go to the MS Download Center, and get the viewer
security update by download
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7dbadbd1-0542-475b-91b5-90dd2af2c0fc&DisplayLang=en

Save it to disk, then run it to install.

Yes, I've got that viewer and I've got no problem with automatic
updates normally.
I went to the update history and clcked where it said to find out how
to solve the problem and all I got was failed.
I went to the windows folder and KB914451 wasn't there, as it failed
to install it wouldn't would it?
If I uninstalled the viewer would it stop the the updates?
I can then install it again if I need it again

Do you have that viewer on your system?

Check your settings for Automatic Updates.
I'd advise, if you are using automatic updates, you configure it to
notify you "before" downloading and
"before" installing. e.g. do not have it on "full auto".

HOW TO: Configure Automatic Updating in Windows XP - 306525
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306525

Use Windows Explorer, find, and look at contents of file KB914451.log

This log file should be in your Windows folder (usually C:\WINNT or
C:\Windows )

Also, Go to Windows Update, but then select View update history.
(When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update,
look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update
history".) If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to
click on that error note, and see some info.
