Thanks for all your help.
I know it was not CPU overheating as I checked that.
It turns out that the problem started after I installed the Beta 2 version
of Windows Defender which would not run correctly for me so I uninstalled
it. I removed all the pieces including registry entries. However the bugs in
the program caused a corruption in My Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
Mainly the problem of freezing showed up every time we used either program.
This of course irked my wife who uses those two programs all the time.
The solution came when I reinstalled (repaired) these two and has not
recurred.
Your help in explaining to me the proper use of Task Manager showed me how
to troubleshoot the problem and I've been running the Manager continuously
since then.
The help that I find on these newsgroups and by the gurus like yourself make
using a computer much more pleasurable and useful.
Many, Many thanks
Best regards,
Werner

A further report. I'm running Task manager and it has opened a whole new
world for me. It is showing what processes are using cpu space.
The "system idle process" seems to be using 99% of cpu space all the time.
Where do I find it and how can I get it down in system usage?
You help has been great and I need to pick your brain just a bit more.
Thanks.
Werner
System Idle Process is normal and so is vsmon.exe (part of Zone
alarm). But if your CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there, this is
the problem.
Could be an overheating CPU or a faulty CPU or Motherboard. If you
don't feel confident checking these out, take it to a professional.
Good luck.
