I basically lost really important information by hastily saving a Word
document to a 'temporary internet files' folder. Okay here's what happened:
1) I worked in Word at my office. To work at home, I emailed the document to
myself.
2) I opened the document at home from my email, revised it, and just pressed
SAVE. It gave it the same name, tacking "[2]" to the previous file name. I
assumed it was putting the file in a general 'my documents,' & only just
realized (by navigating back from similarly saved files) that it was going in
a temporary folder.
3) So for a week I continued to open the document through Word, just using
that recently-opened list of files they give at the bottom of the File menu.
But since the last time, I've opened others and booted one off the list. As I
look at similarly-saved files, I can backtrack to the name of temporary
folder, but once I reach "temporary internet folders" it automatically shuts
down Word and the navigation tool.
4) I am wondering if there's anyway I can use recover these files by making
my computer go back 6 days. Will this work, I think it's called 'restoring'
it?
System Restore does not protect user created data files. It only
works with the Windows operating system files, registry entries, and
configuration settings.
Try searching your hard drive for the file. If you just search for
*.doc you will get a listing of all of the Microsoft Word documents on
the hard drive, which may be a bit much to sort through. If you can
specify the exact file name the search will be more precise.
And when you find the file please use the "save as" function to put it
into some other folder.
