Re: system restore points are deleted

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Charles,

Yes, you will want to disable monitoring of all drives other then the
one Windows is installed on. That should fix the problem. Here are some
links with step by step instructions.

Guys,
My Think Pad R40 came with Windows XP Home Ed. For as long
as I have had this laptop, it has never had more than one
restore point. It is always the restore point with a time
stamp of the current date at the hour that I turned on the
computer.

Recently another person had a similar problem and Bert Kinney
(MS-MVP Shell/User) suggested checking the event viewer for
system restore messages. Here is a copy of the most recent
"sr: event (and it has a red X beside it)...
==========begin event==========
Event Type: Error
Event Source: sr
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: 2/19/2006
Time: 8:00:34 PM
User: N/A
Computer: LAPDAWG
Description:
The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error
'0xC000007F' while processing the file 'desktop.ini' on the volume
'HarddiskVolume4'. It has stopped monitoring the volume.
==========endof event==========
Here is an "srservice" event message. Note that it implies
a lack of disk space (NOT EXACTLY TRUE)
==========begin event==========
Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 107
Date: 2/19/2006
Time: 8:00:44 PM
User: N/A
Computer: LAPDAWG
Description:
The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not
enough disk space available on the drive
\\?\Volume{58258f95-cb31-11d7-9bdf-00061bcb84ea}\. System Restore will
automatically resume service once at least 200 MB of free disk space
is available on the system drive.
==========endof event==========
This last message implies that I am low on disk space.
I CERTAINLY have enuf disk space on C:\...
C:\ main hard drive space formated NTFS
(i.e. where Windows is installed)
9.76GB Total 5.18GB Used 4.58GB Free
D:\ CDROM
E:\ a small 36MB FAT32 disk space common to my other O/S

QUESTION(s)

(a) Can I tell restore to ignore the E:\ drive ?
(b) If system restore ignores the E:\ drive, will my
system begin to save more than one restore point?
(c) Can I "FIX" desktop.ini so that the problem goes away?

Thanks,
Charles
