Thank you for this lengthy explanation. I learned from it, and I hope others will too. However, I forgot to mention that I'm using headphones, and the noise is coming from the headphones plug on the laptop. Same results with 2 headphones. There are volume buttons, but they control the Volume Control in Windows. There is no physical volume control for that plug. From what I learned here, it appears the plug is set to max (which causes the noise), and there's no way to adjust it. :-(
