Colin,
A repair installation should have worked but activation would have been
denied. I did not realize that you were using an OEM version of XP Pro.
I think the OEM rule about being tied to the hardware is rediculous as well.

This is probably a common problem but my PC is down and it's not easy

My mobo failed today. I replaced it with a celeron bundle. New memory,
new mobo, new cpu. I have an Acronis True Image v8 image of my C:
partition.
The new hardware works well but when loading the XP pro O/S it stops
at the safe mode screen. Any option that I take offers me the "blue
screen of death". It says that windows has detected a problem and has
shut down. It advise me to run checkdisk/F.
What I really want is to alter the Acronis image so that it can cope
with the new hardware. Any help, please?

In spite of all the help on the web and this NG after 3 days we got
nowhere.Yesterday microsoft told us we had to go and buy a new copy of
XP before they could talk us through repairing our O/S.
After spending more than £100 on we were then told that it could never
be repaired because we had changed the mobo. This had been told to
them many times.
XP OEM IS MATCHED TO THE MOBO. WHEN THE MOBO DIES XP DIES. Please
remember this disgraceful fact.
Bash.
