Programs delayed after net connection

Hi

The following problem happens just about every time I connect to the net.

- Programs open normally
- I use the "Connect to BT Broadband" icon
- Connects OK
- It is set to auto open IE, but doesn't
- Now when I try to open any other program they fail to open
- When I double-click an icon the little hour glass shows on the cursor for
a few seconds then disappears
- After about 5 mins all the programs I tried to open, open up ok
- Computer then runs normally

I am running AVG and ZoneAlarm
My HOSTS file is updated and locked
I update and run Ad-Aware, Bazooka, ewido, Spybot and MS Antispyware
reguarly

Any suggestions greatly appreciated
