Re: Windows XP incompatible with old motherboard?

While Windows XP will load on a computer with a 350 MHz CPU, it does not
run, it walks as you have found out.
I never upgrade a customers computer to XP unless they have a minimum of 1
GHz cpu and 256 Megs of RAM. Even then, I advise them that the performance
will be less than they would get with a Windows 9x on that same machine.

Yes you can return the computer to a 98 status.
If you did an upgrade to Windows XP, and left the harddrive in FAT32 there
should be an uninstall option for Windows XP.
If you did a clean install with Windows XP, you are going to have to
reformat the drive and start over.
Note: If you let XP change the hard drive to the NTFS format, you are going
to have to remove the "non Dos" partition.
FDISK will allow you to do this, but read the information windows carefully.
The 120 MB hard drive may be a problem is your BIOS does not recognize that
size, but the disk vendor's web site should have software to format the full
drive.

: Hi All:
: I recently upgraded my 98 Gateway computer from Win98 to XP Home. I
: have XP on my new computer and liked it and thot it would be compatible
with
: my old computer. Now I am not sure. I have frequent episodes of the
: taskmaster showing 100% CPU usuage until it hangs up. I can't complete
virus
: scans w/out it hanging, trying to record music from CD's to the
hard-drive
: sometimes causes it to hang up and runs at 100% usuage so that nothing
else
: can be done at the same time without hanging up. After seeing the
problems, I
: went to the gateway website and looked up my motherboard and it says it
: doesn't support XP. Microsoft says all I need is a Pentium CPU to run XP?
: This computer is a Pentium II and runs at 350 |Mhz. Using the XP O.S. it
now
: takes longer to download from the internet, longer to open windows and
seems
: sluggish overall. Can I wipe the drive and go back to Win98 O.S. after
: installing XP? I have the original Win98 CD and a start-up floppy disk.
: Unless someone can explain how to fix my problems and assure me my
: motherboard is compatible with XP, that would seem to be my best
: alternative. Just in case it helps, here is all the information on the
: computer:
