Is the driver file compressed? Is it a self extracting .exe or a .zip
file? Have you extracted/unzipped it if it is?
yes, setupGS.exe extracted to S3305dex.exe, and setupGS.exe removed to
subfolder

Are you sure you downloaded the correct drivers? What I found at Canon's site for your scanner and XP are two downloads, both of which when extracted have driver version 1.2.1.

Scangear CS - 8000F8120WNEN.exe v 8.1.2.1 which extracted to a folder 8000F8120WNEN. There is also a .pdf file on the same site page as the download for this file that clearly states the scanner be disconnected before installing the driver.
From the .pdf: 8000F_Install_Procedure.pdf

Note: Make sure to disconnect the scanner from the PC when installing downloaded ScanGear CS. For Windows 2000 or Windows XP, make sure to log in by Administrator address when installing the software.

The second download is:
WIADriver8000F.exe v 8.1.2.1 which also extracted to a folder with the same name minus the extension as stated on the same site page as the download.
From the site:
<quote>
CanoScan 8000F Scanner WIA Driver for Windows XP
- Driver and application software files have been compressed.
The following instructions show you how to download the compressed files and decompress them.

1. To download files, click the file link, select [Save], and specify the directory where you want to save the file. The download will start automatically.
2. Downloaded files are saved in the specified folder in a self-extracting form (.exe format).
3. If double-click the files to decompress them, a new folder will be created in the same folder.
New folder has the same name with the decompressed file.
4. Double-click the decompressed Setup.exe file. to start installation
</quote>

make sure to read the Readme file if included which
should have the instructions for installation.
contains nothing about installation, only about application

It also states aside from other issues that the CS drive and WIA driver Cannot be installed on the same system for the same scanner.

If it is not compressed, then the drivers are not in the directory/folder
that you browsed to and that is why the ok button isn't selectable.
Yes it (one only) is there...

I think I had this already some considerable tima ago as well, but I don't
remember what the solution was - I probably just left it as is.

But it doesn't appear to be a problem of the driver as such, since the
graying out happens immediately on selecting the directory, and the hardware
assistant is unlikely to be able to judge the S3305dex.exe as invalid. It
rather appears as a matter of some circumstances within XP.

It's not an XP issue, you simply cannot click OK because the driver install files are inside the installation exe, this goes for both driver downloads. If the files are in an install exe No Windows can see them. After extracting the download I had a peek inside the install exe's and that is where the .inf files are along with other files. Now if you care to you can extract those files from the install file and try to install from DM, however that is not mentioned in Canons suggested installation.

I tried to just start S3305dex.exe, but nothing happened, so it's probably
not the intended procedure. The driver interface still shows the old version
number.

That file wasn't in either download I checked into here. That number doesn't even match the scanner model you posted.
