XP Pro and the case of the changed splash screen

Last May I Installed XP Pro on my friend computer.

Over the past few months he was saying that it was taking longer &
longer for the machine to boot and all the programmes was running slow.
To me, it was looking like software problems, possibly spyware or
something that was causing it to run slow. After running checks
everything seemed clear.
This christmas he changed the memory thinking it was that, but it
made no difference, so he said "sod it" and brought a new machineand gave
the old one to his son.
Today (4/1/06) I went to his son house to have a look at it.

When I booted it, it took about 30 minutes to load. The splash
screen read "Microsoft Windows XP".

After trying alsorts of thing, (cleaning out dead files,
uninstalling all the software, changing cables) it made no difference. It
looked like there was a problem getting data from the HD. Once a
programme had loaded into memory it worked fine. Even closing and
reloading because it was still in memory.
I said I'd take it home and try another HD. But before I did that I
said I'll try reinstalling XP.
I cleaned the drive and started the install of XP Pro and when the
splash screen appeared it read "Microsoft Windows XP Professional".
Finished installing and everything run fine.

Has anyone noticed this change on the splash screen and what caused
it

Chris..
