I was having the same problem with some old CDs I was trying to copy. In my case polishing the CDs clean fixed the problems.
I'm just guessing here, but it was like the CDs were scuffed and the player would lose its place on the CD and continue trying to retrack where it should be. I don't even know if such a thing is possible, but it sounds good, doesn't it?
