Run fsutil dirty query c: from cmd
If it comes back: "Volume - c: is Dirty", Then you must run Chkdsk /f
/r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You
must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system
partition.
I would also order Windows XP SP2 CD from Microsoft. If you did
everything correctly as you say, that is the only unknown quantity in
your mix. That and the fact that the new drive could be hosed.
