XP fails to boot with accelerated video drivers

I have a really odd problem. I have a computer that recently got a new
video card (ATI Radeon 9550 AGP) because the old one died. Right now
the computer will boot as long as the ATI drivers AREN'T loaded. So VGA
mode works, safe mode works, and regular mode works IF you uninstall the
drivers. If ATI drivers are installed, the computer hangs and the boot
screen where it displays the Windows logo and the moving bar at the
bottom. The bar stops moving and the computer completely freezes. I
also tried an NVIDIA GeForce2 Ti card that I had. The machine boots all
the way up in VGA mode and then the little balloon comes up saying it
found the card and is installing drivers for it. Then the computer
completely freezes. As I said before the comp. works perfectly in VGA
mode.
Can this be fixed without a reinstall?
