Sound card code 10 problem

Hi Group
My Fathers XP pc has just encountered a sound card problem since updating
from the Microsoft update website.
He has an Asrock MB (k7s8xe) with onboard sound C-media AC97. He updated
the driver to this card from the Microsoft website, restarted his machine
and lost the sound. I uninstalled the drivers, download the latest drivers
from the Asrock website but all that keeps happening now is the sound card
is in the device manager with a yellow exclamation mark saying the card
cannot start 'code 10'.
I have 'googled' on this and seems like a lot of people have had the same
problem but cannot find a fix.
I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of old drivers but to no
avail. and just keep getting the same problem.
Any ideas anyone? Appreciate any help on this.
Thanks
TK
