Unable to get SP2 to install correctly

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop with 500MB Ram and 2.4 GHz
processor. I have attempted to install the Windows update version of
SP2 3 times only to find the same problems:

1. Upon boot up it takes a long time for desktop icons to appear.
2. Help & Support won't come up and then on successive reboots
3. the Taskbar will not even appear
4. Double clicking icons will not run some programs -- just shows an
hourglass cursor for a few seconds.
5. After the first bootup, a yellow placard came up saying that I
didn't need both Norton and Windows security center and to click on OK
to use only Norton. Clicking on OK did nothing and I could not get rid
of this window. On successive reboots it continued to appear with the
same results.

During the first two attempts of upgrading to SP2 in the fall of 2004,
I had programs running that I thought might be the problem. FreeRam
Pro (gets rid of old stuff in RAM), A program that hides folders and a
program that creates a Ram Disk.

A couple weeks ago when making my third attempt at SP2 I had
uninstalled all of the above 3 programs but was still running
ZoneAlarm 6.1 and Norton Antivirus 5.0. Also I have Norton Systemworks
on board which is about a 2002 version. And last but not least I still
use Norton Navigator which is about a 1996 version (I like its search
function better than windows explorer, etc.). Supposedly Norton
Antivirus 5 is OK with Windows XP but there is no mention on the
Symantec Site that says to uninstall it prior to installing SP2. Might
Systemworks, Norton Navigator or even Zonealarm be the culprit?

Each time I struck out with SP2, I had to do a complete reinstall of
Windows XP from the CD then use Windows Update to get SP1 and all the
security updates. I'm about fed up with spending a week getting my
computer back up with SP1 but I see that in September 2006, there will
be no more updates or patches for SP1. Therefore, unless I can cram
SP2 into this machine in the next nine months I will be S.O.L. (Sure
outa luck for you young folks)

Any help greatly appreciated!
