File associations vanish!!

Trying to fix daughter's PC running XP Home. Some nasty appears to
have got in and removes the associations with .lnj, .exe and .reg
files! I have managed to get them back and have run Spyware Doctor
(371 problems fixed!) and Adware but on a reboot it reappears again!
Anyone know what this nasty is and how to get rid of it please?

Task Manager is corrupted
... I tried to kill the exe ... I managed to kill that nasty exe. ... I ended up in a corrupted task manager. ... I tried searching newsgroups if re-installing taskmgr.exe will help me ...
