In IE, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure the box “Show Pictures” is ticked.

With regard to the activex problem - there have been some problems after installing KB896688. Have you installed this update?

There is a download that may assist:
OLEfix.zip available here http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip
NB, the origin is from MS Support and it is a registry file.
You Extract it, double click on the OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes when you are asked if you are sure you want to add the information in the OLEfix.reg to the registry.
Suggest you reboot the computer.

  See if this helps:
Right click the IE icon on the desktop.
Click Properties > Privacy tab.
In the Popup blocker pane make sure "Block pop-ups is checked".
Click the Settings Button and make sure "Show information bar...." is checked.
Click Close > Apply > Ok.
