out of memory

A freind of mine who has winxp home edition on a machine with 256Mb of ram. When he tries to use Canon Scangear program it gets so far into scanning, say 70/80%, then stops with a message box saying the is not enough memory. I have increasd the size of the paging file to 400mb min and 1000mb max, but it has not mad any difference. Also rebootingdid not change anything either. Any ideas please? Thanks --
