problem with sound

Ok here goes.....
Hereâ??s my information:
DELL
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 2002
Internet Explorer 6.0
Flashplayer 8.0 and Java 5.0 with updater
Intel [R]
Pentium [R] 4 CPU 2.66 GHz
512MB of RAM
I have tried everything I can think of and am still not getting a
solution. I have no sound at all. I went to a website and there was
no sound like there should be. I went to other websites that was
supposed to have sound and the same occured no sound.
I went to the Internet then clicked on Tools>Internet Options>Advanced
Tab>Multimedia and checked the checkbox, "Play sounds in web pages."
That did not help.
At the same time the problem occured, the volume icon disappeared from
the desktop icon tray. I went to start>Control Panel>Sounds, Speech
and Audio Devices>Sound and Audio Devices. I checked, "Place volume
icon in taskbar" then clicked "OK." I even rebooted the computer.
That didnâ??t help either.
I right-clicked on "Start" and clicked "Properties" then the task bar
tab. I looked into the past icons and the volume icon is not there as
if I never used it and I know I have used it in the past.
Another person suggested this which I tried but it didnâ??t help:
1 Go to control panel
2 Add hardware
3 At "Welcome" screen, press next
4 Select "Yes, I have already connected this hardware". Press next
5 Scroll down, and select "Add a new hardware device"
6 Select "Install the hardware I select from a list"
7 Select "Sound, video and game controllers"
8 Select "(standard system devices)" in pane 1, and "Audio Codecs" in
pane 2
9 Press "Have Disk"
10 Enter "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32" in the drop down box and press "OK"
11 Select "Microsoft Audio Compression Manager" and press "Next" ,
then "Next" again.
12 At the security screen, press "Continue anyway"
It will install and require a reboot
If it still does not work, then follow the same procedure, but at step
11 choose "IMA ADPCM Audio CODEC" and do it third time only select
"Microsoft ADPCM Audio CODEC.".
I stopped at #11 because a message came up about doing so can cause
damage to the system either now or later so I stopped, not comfortable
of going on.
I also checked the advanced volume control panel to make sure all
"mute" checkboxes were unchecked and they werenâ??t checked to start
with.
At the same time the problem occured, Musicmatch Jukebox 10.0 would
not let me hear anything either. I got this error message: "MMJB
soundcard problem" then "WaveOut Format not supported." I contacted
Tech Support at MusicMatch and they have not given me a solution,
including uninstalling the software, reinstalling it, rebooting the
computer, deleting all related files and folders. I went to
C:Program Files to find all folders related to Musicmatch and deleted
them and deleted it out from registry editor. I decided to try MMJB
9.0, an older version but I got the same error message.
The tech support suggested that the soundcard I have may not be set up
properly. I went to control panel>System>Hardware tab>Device Manager.
I had a list of things under "Sound, Video and game controllers":
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Logitech Microphone (Messenger)
Media Control Devices
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs
I clicked on SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio to get the
soundcardâ??s details. The manufacturer is Analog Devices, Inc and
the location is PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5 and the message is
telling me the device is working properly. I even checked for updates
and the wizard tells me it canâ??t find a better match for it. The
device is also enabled.
Another person also told me to go to start>run> then type
Sndvol32.exe. It only brought up the advanced volume control panel
which is not a problem. The icon on the taskbar is the problem.
The strange thing is that I hear no sound from only MMJB, the Internet
or when I log off but I do get sound and music from Realplayer,
Windows Media Player and PowerDVD.
Nothing here have worked and I donâ??t know what to do. Any
suggestions?
