Re: safely remove hardware icon??

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

> When installing USB device, do you get a system initiated noise or chime?

yes I get the chime when inserting or removing the USB flash drive

> Acknowledging that device was inserted. just don't get icon.

that is correct, the "safely remove hardware" icon does not (ever) show up on the task bar

> Does device show up in Device manger?

yes, and it goes away when I pull the drive

> Does device show up in My computer?

yes it does

> You can use/read usb device?

yes, add files, read files, format, etc etc.

> just no remove icon!

yes. since I have been tracking this over the last few days, I've noticed a big change in the
icons running in the system tray. on one boot, there'll be 9, which is normal, then on anoter boot
there will be 3 or 4. I've gone into the task bar properties and "customized" the behavior of the
"current items" in the system tray (setting the behavior of the "safely remove hardware" icon to
"always show") but it still never shows up.

It's been over a year since I have cleaned house on this box, I'm starting to think that I'll just
do a HD wipe and start fresh...
