"bxf"s suggestion of trying system restore is good.
You could also try running the system file checker:
start > run
cmd [return]
C:> sfc /scannow
you can get more details at http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html (just
the first page I came across when googling).
Do you have any errors or warnings logged in your system (or application)
event logs? Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
Look for any errors - there may be some which are perfectly innocent, but as
a rule I wouldn't expect to see any errors logged. It would be worth
skimming through any warnings, but you'll often see warnings and mostly they
can be ignored. Post back anything that looks relevant.
You could also try reinstalling xp. If you have the original cd (and it is
NOT a restore cd - do not try this with a restore cd), then if you boot from
the cd and let it "upgrade" your installation. So long as you don't tell it
to format your disk then it should reinstall all the key system files whilst
preserving your applications and other settings. I've known it to help with
some problems (and totally fail to help with others), but it shouldn't make
things worse. Try this as a last resort.
Hope this helps.
