| Ok this one might be a little long. I was purusing the internet when i
| happened upon a super trojan virus, basically it downloaded a whole bunch of
| extra viruses on my computer.
| I managed to rid my self of the virus threat which included, spy sheriff,
| some e-pay virus, and many more, using hijackthis. But of course HiJackThis
| does not distinguish between pertinent system files and viruses it locates
| and shows them all to you and you have the option to delete certain files.
| I must have deleted a few more than what was needed. The viruses are gone,
| but so is the use of my desktop, which includes the start bar, shortcuts, and
| so on. The only way I can open certain files or programs that actually still
| work, is by hitting ctrl+alt+del and using NEW TASK. When I try and accesss
| a menu inside of one of these programs it freezes and does not respond, plus
| anything that does open and work, like firefox (suprisingly enough), and
| itunes, when I close it the image is left on the desktop, move a window and
| it collages the desktop with multiple windows.
| Then more fun, to my dismay when I got fed up and went to re format and re
| install XP I relized that I don't know where my copy is. So in conclusion if
| anyone has any ideas on how i can repair my XP Pro so it will work again, for
| the love of the computer gods, please tell me what to do, I'm putty in your
| hands.
|
| Thanks in advance,
|
| Kyle
I don't know what you did but I bet you did not make the needed Registry corrections. The
following tool will make those needed Registry corrections and will remove any viruses or
other malware found to be on the PC
Download SmitFraud.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe
Execute; SmitFraud.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.
Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }
A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the
end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer).
It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan.
It would be a good idea to scan in Safe Mode and in Normal Mode and save a copy of the HTML
report for each session.
