How much RAM memory?
Have you ever run chkdsk? How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315265
Before running chkdsk run Disk CleanUp in each active User Profile to remove Temporary Internet Files.
Then try running Disk Defragmenter. If you still encounter problems run it in Safe Mode.

Hope this helps.

Hi, is it ok and possable to use the win 98se disk defrager on win XP
instead of using the one that came with XP? I ask because with the old one
I get a full screen display of each cluster being moved as not with win XP.
Im trying to defrag an 80 gig HDD but win xp's defrag keeps freezing.
Probably will depend on whether XP drive is formatted NTFS. If so, a definite *NO*.
Try running Disk Error Checking before running defrag.
