Missing cd drive from win xp laptop

My cd drive on my Panasonic ToughBook has disappeared from My Computer,
Device Manager and is not seen by any software (Media Player, winamp etc.)

Inserting a cd fires up the drive and lights up the required led's etc but
windows just doesn't want to know.

I ran windows restore and it returned briefly until it went into hibernation
and never returned. Checked Norton for viruses and all clear.

I've installed and run cdgone and xp_cd-dvd-fix but it still refuses to show
itself.

Now my instinct tells me to reinstall windows but how will i do it without
the cd drive being recognised?!
