I cannot rename any file or folder.

When I try to rename a file or folder I get the warning that if I do choose
to rename it, it will become unusable. The file/folder is not open at the
time. This happens when I right-click and select "rename" and when I use the
"rename" option into File/Folder task box to the left of my screen. However,
I can rename it by opening the file, saving it as a different name, closing
out of it, deleting the old file with the old name. This is much more time
consuming and very inconvenient. It leads to duplicate files, just with 2
different names. How can I rename a file simply by right clicking and
selecting "rename" without the file becoming unusable??
