It would be helpful to know a little bit more about how your
network is strucured:
For instance, do you have a router or hub in place and how are
your computers connected to it?
How does the laptop access the internet?
Does it have a direct connection to the modem or are you using
Internet Connection Sharing through your desktop?
Since I don't have that info, this is my best guess on what you
should do:
Shut down both your laptop and your desktop.
If applicable, unplug your router.
Unplug your cable modem.
After waiting a minute of two plug the cable modem back in.
Wait for all the lights on the front panel to remain lit.
Plug your router back in.
Wait until you see a network activity light.
Restart you computers.
Test both internet and network connectivity.
If this doesn't fix the problem then you might want to do the
following:
On each machine go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the
Open box.
Click OK.
In the command prompt window enter this:
ipconfig /all >C:\IPinfo.txt
Note: There's a space between ipconfig and /all as well as /all
and >C:\IPinfo.txt
That command has created a text file at the root of your C
drive named IPinfo.
Open this file and copy the contents.
Paste that information into a reply to this message.
Make sure to note which info goes with which computer.
FYI, in the future you might want to post questions that are
related to networking issues to this newsgroup:
