Steve you have Win98 with 4 partitions so if you wish to install XP onto one
of them and set it to NTFS there are a number of ways of addressing this.
Also you were concerned about having to reformat the whole drive if things
go wrong. As long as you install XP on a seperate partition (which is the
correct approach) even if the install was to go pear shaped that partition
can be re formatted independent of the others preserving your Win98 setup.

One way would be to install XP, during the install your prompted for the
destination partition and whether you wish to format to FAT32/NTFS. NTFS is
the obvious choice. Make sure you select the right partition not your Win98
one.

Even if you installed XP onto a FAT32 partition it is possible to convert
the XP partition to NTFS without losing data etc. With XP running simply at
the rum prompt type "cmd" then at the C: prompt type " convert x:/fs:ntfs.
Substitute the x: for your partition letter that holds your XP operating
system. It will inform you the conversion with be executed at reboot. The
files system of the xp partition will be converted to ntfs.

Additionally you can use third party software like PartitionMagic to format
partitions to FAT32/NTFS etc. Be aware what Andrew E said Win 98 has no
understanding of ntfs and any ntfs partitions will be invisible if you boot
to Win98. XP however, can see the FAT32 ones.

The key to booting multi operating systems is to place them on seperate
partitions and to install them in order of evolution i.e install the
earliest ones first. In your case install Win98 first then XP. If you
install XP then Win98 on the second one youd have problems.
