Blank screen, safe mode won’t work.

I am worried that I may have an unsolvable problem (outside of a full
recovery anyway).

When I start my HP Pavilion laptop it goes to the Windows XP screen
with the scroll bar---as if it is starting up. But, then the screen
goes blank! It just sits there. I tried to start in safe mode but that
freezes up as well once it reads X # of files. I tried to reinstall
Windows XP and it freezes up when it gets to the part that reads
"searching for previous windows editions." It also does not work at
startup (the F8 screen) when I select to go back to the last working
version.

Any ideas?
