Evidently you have not done your homework regarding update downloads and
installation. Microsoft provides the option of you downloading updates and
installing them AUTOMATICALLY OR MANUALLY-- set XP to download updates
automatically but to notify you rather then installing automatically. Doing
so results in a "balloon" appearing on the task bar notifying you that
updates are available for "installation' - there will be two in initial
choices - "express" (Auto install of all updates) OR "CUSTOM" which lists
updates individually - clicking an update indicates its purpose - provides a
check box if you want to install the update. Another option is
available --which if you select you will not receive any further notice
pertaining to updates you choose not to install.
