Using Switch User causes screen to go black

I have two accounts on my XP system. Switch User has been working normally
until now. If you are logged into one account and select switch user, as
soon as you select the other user's account icon, the screen goes black. The
only way to shut down the computer is to dump it with the power switch. The
only way to boot up normally is to go into safe mode and select, "last known
good configuration". This corrects the problem until you use switch user
again. It does not matter which account you boot up with, as soon as you use
switch user and select the other user's account icon, the screen goes black.
