Internet Explorer has scrambled my Firefox and Opera Bookmarks !!!


My system is a HP Media Center PC model m1160n, 3400+ AMD Athlon 64 CPU,
512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM, Windows XP SP2; 4 months old, software auto-updated.

Internet Explorer has scrambled my Firefox and Opera Bookmarks !!!

I'm assuming Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (and/or Windows XP Service Pack
2) is the likely culprit here. Even though IE 6 is not my default browser,
it recently changed all my Mozilla-type Bookmarks icons from the orange
Firefox image I'd normally expect to see over to the blue Microsoft "e"
image; not a good sign. Perhaps a complete reinstall of IE 6 and/or Windows
XP SP2 (if I only knew how) might eradicate the main problem, which is:

If I load/open my decade's worth of Bookmarks in Firefox 1.03 or Opera 8.0
as a Web Page, everything is fine, organized exactly as I saved it. But when
I go to each of these programs' standard Bookmarks Manager page, all 20,000+
scrupulously-organized entries are scrambled -- readable, but in no
discernable order, and with the past year missing entirely (some 2004-05
entries accessible via searches) -- and therefore useless as a coherant
directory of links categorized by year & subject.

This is obviously a display or (read-order) interpretation problem (rather
than a persistent & highly specific file storage glitch) -- and I haven't a
clue as to what to do about it. Reinstalls of Firefox and Opera (plus
numerous readjustments of both browsers' preferences, including Bookmarks
sorting) didn't change anything relevant. Nor did trying IEFix v.1.5, which
didn't know where on my computer to find the special XP drivers it needed to
complete all of its operations.

In 20 years of advanced computer usage, I've never come across anything
quite like this crippling situation before. My browsing will be remedial (to
say the least) until I can get my Firefox & Opera Bookmarks entries to
properly display in each program's standard Bookmarks Manager interface, in
the order in which I stored them. Hope you can help. THANKS in advance for
