Look in Control Panel > Power Options. If there is a Hibernate tab, stop.
Your computer should be shutting down automagically. See Mike's post for
info on troubleshooting shutdown problems.
If on the other hand, there is an APM tab: check the box on that page to
enable it. Try shutdown again. If it doesn't work on the first try, give it
one more try before starting shutdown troubleshooting.
If no APM tab, what shows for "Computer" in Device Manager? If Standard PC,
that would be the reason there is no automatic shutdown.
